Spencer’s grandparents live in a friendly neighborhood. Their home is comfortable and seems fairly normal. But one of their basement doors is not like the others. If you open it, instead of leading to a storage room or a spare bedroom, you’ll find yourself in the tropics: a hot blast of air, nearly 100% humidity, and orchids everywhere.
Spencer took studio shots of the blooms one of the last times that we visited. Here are a few of my favorites.

This orchid has so many blooms because of a mutation. A beautiful mutant.

Fun fact: Orchids are judged by the shape of the petals, the symmetry of the petals, and how the petals overlap. In other words, this is a winning plant.
