We’re moving to…

This Summer, if you had asked us where we thought we we’d be in the next few years, we would likely have said Cincinnati. Through a series of unforeseen events we are thrilled to announce:

Spencer just accepted a position as a user experience designer at IBM and we are moving to Austin, Texas in January 2016!

How can you do anything but accept, when your offer letter incorporates your face into the Eye-Bee-M company logo?

We’re excited to continue our adventure in Austin. Come visit:)

Ironman 101: 4 Weeks to Race Ready

Unicity_MakeLifeBetterSpencer added aero bars to his bike, lowered the handle bars to further reduce his profile, and his Tri suit arrived. This combination called for a little photo shoot.

ironman trainingThere’s a cycling joke that n=n+1 (where n is the number of bikes that you need). I feel like this can also apply to cycling gear. Hence the aero bars. That said, Spencer has noticed that the aero bars increase his speed by 1-2 mph which makes a huge difference over 112 miles.

ironman triathlon trainingOne really good decision we made before committing to this Ironman was to get good bikes before we left Utah. Utah has an especially good bike market between seasons (at least compared to Ohio), and KSL trumps Craigslist any day. Bikes are like cars in that their value depreciates as soon as you buy them, so we decided that gently used bikes were the way to go. Spencer used Bicycle Blue Book to negotiate down to a fair price, and I think in the end we got even better deals than we realized at the time. The best thing about the bikes is that we’ll continue to use them after the Ironman. I have great memorizes of biking to our garden with my family, and Spencer has made some great connections on the bike trail. I’m convinced in business biking is the new golf.

Unicitybiking motion blurBehind the scenes as Spencer adjusted settings for the white balance. One perk of being the photographer is that you get to dress weather appropriate. So far I’ve either shot on sport’s mode, or relied on Spencer to get the settings right. I have some work to do before race day since I won’t be able to just hand the camera to Spencer and ask him to ride past a few times. Four more weeks!

Orchids

Spencer’s grandparents live in a friendly neighborhood. Their home is comfortable and seems fairly normal. But one of their basement doors is not like the others. If you open it, instead of leading to a storage room or a spare bedroom, you’ll find yourself in the tropics: a hot blast of air, nearly 100% humidity, and orchids everywhere.

Spencer took studio shots of the blooms one of the last times that we visited. Here are a few of my favorites.

This orchid has so many blooms because of a mutation. A beautiful mutant.

Fun fact: Orchids are judged by the shape of the petals, the symmetry of the petals, and how the petals overlap. In other words, this is a winning plant.

We think we’ll print a few of these pictures for our home. Which would you choose?

Ironman Training 101: 12 Weeks to Race Ready

The last few weeks of iron man training have been a bit sporadic (with Spencer’s work deadlines and me doing translating when I get home from work), but now that Spencer has time he is back to training more regularly. Earlier last week, Spencer found out about a free unofficial half ironman race about three hours away. Friday afternoon we decided to give it a shot and Saturday morning we left the house at 3:30 AM to drive to Laurel Lake, KY.

7 AM at Laurel Lake. Do you see the white sign on the other side that the swimmers were supposed to sight off of? Yep, me neither. This is when I realized that I was going to be at least 30 minutes slower than the last swimmer and would probably get lost/disoriented in the fog, so I volunteered to photograph the swim instead. The fog eventually wore off, but I don’t regret that decision.

7:55 AM done with the swim! Spencer beat his goal by two minutes. Not bad for his first ever open water swim.

Next up: Hills on the bike.

We haven’t trained on hills, so this was more of a challenge. Spencer kept up with the group and did not get lost. I started later and planned to do about half the distance they were covering. Then I ran into bees, was chased by dogs, and got lost twice. I finally met up with the group at the last water stop as they were coming back. With about 9 miles left, I started up the steepest hill of the course and as I was switching gears my chain snapped. (I think I cross-chained). Like I’ve said before, time seems to slow down when you realize that you can’t clip out fast enough and see the ground slowly rising up towards you. I was going slowly, so it was mostly just my pride that was hurt. And then I had to walk a few miles with my bike before someone was able to pick me up… but the race went on and by the time that I got back Spencer was on the run. Spencer ran the middle five miles with me–which made me feel more apart of the race–before he sped up again to complete the last stretch.

2:15 PM. Finishing strong with a time of exactly 7 hours. That is 1:15 hrs faster than two months ago. Not a bad PR.

Krista’s Wedding

Remember the pictures from Krista’s bridal shower? Less than a week after Spencer and I drove out to Ohio for P&G, I flew back to Utah for Krista’s wedding.

Krista and Kyle were married in the Bountiful, Utah temple. We don’t take pictures inside the temple or during the wedding ceremony, but if you’re curious about what the inside of a temple looks like here are some good pictures and explanations. Also, here are pictures taken before the Payson Temple was dedicated this past June.

A few moments of my favorite moments from the day:

The sealing room was really crowded, so I got to sit right next to Krista’s mother. Right after the sealer finished the wedding ceremony, Kyle’s grandma loudly exclaimed “I’ve always wanted a Joy in the family and now I have one”. (Krista’s middle name is Joy). Kyle’s grandmother has since passed away, so it was extra special that she was able to be there for the wedding.

The other girls in this photo flew in from Chicago, Los Angeles, Baton Rouge, (and Provo). They’re all old roommates which made for a very fun luncheon. Kate and her husband just finished two years of Teach for America and she has some crazy stories.

Little details made both the luncheon and reception special. Krista’s mother made the cake, and a friend did the flowers. These pictures don’t do them justice, but Krista had the most beautiful wedding flowers I have ever seen. I think I was even more impressed because the night before I watched the friend carefully arrange her masterpieces.

Life Lately

Well, I had good intentions to write the weekly training update, but then got a full time job and have been traveling on the weekends. So that update will be sporadic.

Now that life has calmed down a bit, here are a few things that I want to remember from the last few weeks.

monkey bars

4th of July in DC. Sparklers and monkey bars before the two little girls went to bed.

National Mall 4th of July

Fireworks on the National Mall for the older kids. The best place to celebrate Independence Day. Also, the younger boys were pros at watching the finale and then running the mile back to the metro station, so that we could beat most of the crowd. Home by 11pm made that trip a success.

Chocolate Cake and Berries

We’ve been completely spoiled this summer and are seriously going to miss all the desserts that the Stocktons whip up.

Ironman Training 101: 19 Weeks To Race Ready

5 Triathlon Training Tips:

1. Clipping out of your bike takes practice. There’s nothing worse than coming to a stop and realizing that your feet are still clipped in as you slowly fall to the pavement. I’m still sporting some lovely scratches and bruises on my hands and elbows to prove it.

2. “Triathlon training Spencer” is much happier than “GMAT prep Spencer.” And frankly so is his wife. Something about being outside and feeling healthy…

3. Old baggy shirts don’t work when seriously biking. Going downhill at 30 mph causes some serious billowing.

4. Bike shorts are an absolute must. Even for stationary bikes. Your bottom will thank you.

5. Burn Relief Hydrogel Pads are the best way to deal with blisters. Seriously, they are so much better than moleskin. Just cut off a square and place it on the blister or hot-spot. Then cover the pad with a band-aid to keep it on your foot. Store the pads in the fridge to get a chilled effect, or just keep them with your normal band-aids.
